Privacy and data
Statement dated 18 October 2026
In short
- No accounts, no forms, no cookies, no analytics, no tracking and no advertising. That is why there is no cookie banner: there is nothing to consent to.
- No data is sold or shared for marketing, and none is used for profiling.
- Your settings are kept in your own browser, not on a server.
- Some features load data from other services (hosting, weather, map tiles and, only if you ask, train times). Those services receive your IP address, as any website you visit does.
- Your location is used only if you choose “Use my location”. It is rounded to about 1 km.
Who is responsible
The Weekend Nature Almanac is a non-commercial personal project. Responsible for this website (controller): Arnaud Van de Vondel, Switzerland.
Contact: [address to be added]
The almanac runs no server of its own and receives no personal data from the features described below. The other services named on this page are responsible for what they do with the data they receive.
What is processed, and why
Hosting: every visit
The site is served by Cloudflare Pages (Cloudflare, Inc., USA). To deliver the pages and protect them against abuse, Cloudflare processes your IP address, the address requested, the date and time, and the information your browser sends with each request, such as its type (user agent). No analytics script is added to the pages.
Cloudflare also sends “Network Error Logging” instructions with each page. If your browser supports them and a connection to the site fails, it may send a short error report (the address, the type of error and the time) to a.nel.cloudflare.com. Successful visits are not reported.
Weather: automatic
When the almanac shows highlights that take place in the next 16 days, your browser requests forecasts from api.open-meteo.com (Open-Meteo GmbH, Switzerland). The request contains the coordinates of the highlights, not yours. Open-Meteo receives your IP address. According to its terms, it keeps server logs for up to 90 days. Forecasts are kept in your browser for 3 hours (see below). Climate figures for later weekends come from a file on this site, so no outside request is needed for them.
Maps: when you scroll to a map or open the Map view
Map images (tiles) come from tile.openstreetmap.org (OpenStreetMap Foundation, United Kingdom). They load only when you open the Map view or scroll close to the map on the weekend page. The tile servers receive your IP address, which tiles are requested (that is, which area is shown) and the address of this site, but not the page you are on. The maps open around your starting point, so the requested area roughly shows where that starting point is. The OpenStreetMap Foundation publishes anonymised, aggregated statistics about tile use.
Train times from your location: only when you tap
For the preset towns, train times are calculated in advance and come from a file on this site. If your starting point is “your location”, the detail view of a highlight offers a button, “Train time from your location”. Only when you press it does your browser send your rounded position, the highlight’s stop and the coming Saturday’s date to transport.opendata.ch (Opendata.ch, Switzerland). Opendata.ch states that it logs each request (time, IP address, the full request including the coordinates, and user agent), keeps these logs for 30 days and hosts the service in Switzerland.
Your location
- Your location is requested only when you choose “Use my location…” as your starting point, and your browser asks for your permission first. It is never requested when the page loads.
- The position is rounded at once to two decimal places (about 1 km) and used on your device to estimate travel times.
- The rounded position is saved in your browser as your starting point until you choose a town instead or clear the site’s data.
- It leaves your device only through the train-time button and the map area described above. It is never sent to the controller.
Everything else comes from this site
The narrated recordings, photos (copies kept on this site), drawings, fonts and the map software (Leaflet) are all served from this site. No fonts or scripts are loaded from other providers, and there are no embedded videos or social media buttons. “Add to calendar” creates the calendar file in your browser.
Links such as “Open in maps” (Google Maps, with the highlight’s position), the SBB timetable, OpenStreetMap, the sources and the photo pages take you to other websites. Nothing is sent to them unless you follow the link. Once you do, their own privacy policies apply.
Stored in your browser
The almanac keeps these items in your browser’s storage. They are not cookies, they are not sent with requests, and only this site’s pages can read them. You can delete them at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.
| Name | What it holds | How long |
|---|---|---|
almanac-theme | Light or dark, if you chose one | Until you choose Auto |
almanac-filters | The categories, trip lengths and countries chosen under Filters | Until changed or cleared |
almanac-home | Your starting point: a town and its coordinates or, if you used your location, “your location” with your rounded position | Until you choose another starting point or clear the site’s data |
almanac-mapmode | Whether the map shows the selected weekend or all year | Until changed or cleared |
almanac-wx3 | Weather forecasts for the highlights’ places (not yours), with the time they were fetched | Entries older than 3 hours are discarded the next time the page runs |
almanac-tr:… (session storage) | The result of a train-time lookup from your location. Its name contains your rounded position, the stop and the date | Until you close the tab |
Recipients and transfers abroad
| Service | When | What it receives | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare (hosting) | Every visit; error reports only if a connection fails | IP address, request details | USA, served from the data centre nearest to you |
| Open-Meteo (weather) | Automatically, for highlights in the next 16 days | IP address, the highlights’ coordinates | Switzerland |
| OpenStreetMap Foundation (map tiles) | When a map comes into view | IP address, the map area shown, this site’s address | United Kingdom |
| Opendata.ch (train times) | Only when you press “Train time from your location” | IP address, your rounded position, the stop and the date | Switzerland |
Switzerland and the EU recognise the United Kingdom as providing adequate data protection. For the USA, Cloudflare states that it is certified under the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Frameworks, and that it falls back on standard contractual clauses. The controller does not sell or share data with anyone else, and does not use any data for profiling or advertising.
Legal basis
Delivering the site, the weather and the maps rests on the legitimate interest in offering a working almanac (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Your location and the train-time lookup are used only at your request, with your browser’s permission (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). The items in your browser’s storage only serve features you use. The Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) applies in the same way.
Your choices and rights
- Choose a town instead of “Use my location”: your position is then never used. Choosing a town later replaces a saved position.
- Refuse or withdraw location permission in your browser settings.
- Clear this site’s data in your browser to delete everything listed above.
- Content blockers may block the outside services. The almanac still works without them, only without weather, maps and the live train-time lookup.
- Under the FADP and the GDPR you can ask for information about, correction of and deletion of your personal data, and object to its processing. The controller holds no data about you, so requests about server logs are best sent to the services named above. For any request or question, write to the contact given at the top of this page; requests are answered within 30 days, as the law requires.
- You can complain to the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) or to the data protection authority in your EU country.
Changes
This page is updated whenever a feature changes what data is used or where it goes. The date at the top shows the last change.
